Millcreek Canyon, on the east side of Utah’s Salt Lake Valley in the Wasatch Mountains, has been tied to local history since Brigham Young named it on August 22, 1847, during the first period of Mormon settlement. Known in Shoshoni as Tempin-Tekkoappah, or “rock trap,” it was valued early for timber, water, and mountain travel. Today it is a heavily used year-round recreation area with trails, picnic areas, camps, winter routes, and varied seasonal rules governing vehicles, bicycles, and dogs. Its recent history also includes the February 6, 2021, Wilson Glade avalanche that killed four skiers and injured four others.
