Northgate Canyon is a 9.8-mile stretch of the North Platte River running from Colorado into Wyoming, where the river follows the western flank of the Park Range and drops about 20 feet per mile. That steep descent creates some of the best Class III+ whitewater in both states, including rapids such as Windy Hole, Cowpie, Narrow Falls, Tootsie Roll, and Stovepipe. The canyon is also valued for its scenery, wildlife, and trout fishing as flows drop and the water clears. Most of the riverbank is public National Forest land, except for a private section at Gingerquill Ranch, and pine bark beetle damage has heavily marked the surrounding forest.
