The original depot at Ponchatoula was built circa 1854 by the New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Railroad, later the Illinois Central. It burned when Union forces captured the town in March 1863. It was rebuilt circa 1865, and the present depot was built in 1894 and remodeled in the 1920's.
