· Scopes Trial Trail
History
13
At this site, F.E. Robinson, George Rappleyea, and others made the first local plans for the Scopes Trial in Robinson's drug store. Next door on the west side, the Aqua Hotel housed, fed, or hosted conferences among Arthur Garfield Hays, Dudley Field Malone, Dr. John R. Neal, Judge John T. Raulston, Bryan, and Darrow during the trial. Across the street, the former Cumberland Presbyterian Church was built two years after the Scopes Trial. F. E. Robinson and Scopes juror Jess Goodrich were members of this church, and elsewhere Bryan and Scopes attended churches in this denomination.
