Kansas's Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway is a seventy-seven-mile route that connects Cheyenne Bottoms and the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, two of the world's most significant natural wetlands. More than sixty thousand acres of wetlands in this region host millions of migrating birds each year, including waterfowl, shorebirds, and whooping cranes, and the region has been named one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas. The route also passes native stone buildings, underground tunnels, metal street art, WPA art and bridges, an operating flour mill, a stretch of the Santa Fe Trail, and a raptor center. It traverses Barton, Reno, and Stafford counties and connects the communities of Claflin, Ellinwood, Great Bend, Hoisington, Hudson, St. John, and Stafford in a landscape marked by the memory of vast bison herds, bird migrations, wild winds and weather, and layered human history.
