Methodist services in Petaluma began in 1849 under Rev. A. J. Heustis, and in 1851 Rev. Isaac Owen organized a ten-point circuit of Methodist churches. The first building used as a Methodist Episcopal church stood at 4th and A Streets, and in 1865 the congregation moved to a new building at Western Ave. and Keller St. After the Methodist Episcopal Church split over slavery in 1845, its two factions reunited in 1939. The current building at 5th and D Streets was consecrated on December 7, 1941, during the service when news arrived of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In 1968, the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church united to form the United Methodist Church, and in 2008 the Fijian community became active members of Petaluma United Methodist Church.
