Mount Waumbek is a northern New Hampshire peak in the Pliny Range of the White Mountains, within the White Mountain National Forest. Drained by brooks flowing to the Israel River and onward to the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound, it is recognized as one of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s four-thousand-footers and is a popular hiking destination. The usual route approaches from U.S. Route 2 near Jefferson village along the Starr King Trail and Cohos Trail, passing Mount Starr King and its former lodge before reaching Waumbek’s wooded summit. Once also known as Pliny Major, the mountain remained undeveloped after an early 1960s ski-area proposal was abandoned and the land transferred to federal ownership.
