Sherwood Island Park at Livingston Manor stood on an island formed by Willowemoc Creek and by water diverted from the creek to power Sherwood's turning mill, grist mill, and cider mill. From the mid 1800's through the early 1900's it was a well known and popular destination that hosted O&W Conductors' Clambakes, fairs sponsored by the Agricultural Society of the Town of Rockland, Fourth of July celebrations, amateur shows by local organizations, horse races, sporting events, concerts, and dances, along with tub races, running races, sack races, putting the shot, climbing a greased pole, gambling devices, and nickel-in-the-slot machines. An August 7, 1891, newspaper account advertised amusements including a ball game, dancing afternoon and evening, splendid music, a pavilion for two hundred couples, a merry-go-round said to be the first of its kind in Sullivan County, and a football game between clubs from the northern part of the state composed entirely of young ladies. In August 1895, the Millard Division No. 104 Order of Railroad Conductors held its ninth annual Conductors' Clambake there, drawing more than 3,500 people, with 2,400 arriving by train and more than 5,000 meal tickets sold for day and evening seatings. Sherwood Island was praised in 1899 as an island of about forty acres and one of the most beautiful places along the line of the Ontario and Western Railway, and in 1895 plans were surveyed there for a half-mile driving track expected to be the best in the county.
