Fabyan Villa in Geneva, Illinois, stood at the heart of George and Nelle Fabyan’s Riverbank estate along the Fox River. Originally a mid-19th-century farmhouse bought in 1905, it was remodeled in 1907 by Frank Lloyd Wright into a modest Prairie-style country house with features of his organic architecture. Around it, the Fabyans created a sprawling estate with elaborate landscape features, recreation, farming, and a Japanese-style garden. Riverbank also became nationally important through Riverbank Laboratories, the first privately owned research facility in the United States and later recognized as the birthplace of American cryptology, where much U.S. military cryptography was conducted during the First World War.
