Barraque Street
History
4
Barraque Street was named for Antoine Barraque (1773-1858), a native of France, a soldier of Napoleon, and one of this area's earliest settlers. He founded New Gascony in this county, was a man of property and an Indian sub-agent, and, trusted and liked by the Quapaw nation, led that tribe to their new home pursuant to the Treaty of 1824. A distinguished citizen of early Jefferson County, Antoine Barraque has descendants still living in Pine Bluff.
