Mountain Home Grove
Nature
Mountain Home Grove in California’s southern Sierra Nevada is one of the world’s most important giant sequoia landscapes, ranking as the second largest sequoia grove and containing four of the twenty largest giant sequoias by volume. Praised by John Muir in 1875, it nevertheless suffered heavy logging from the 1870s through 1956, including the loss of the Centennial tree, while private landowners helped save key stands that now form parts of Balch Park and the state demonstration forest. Later included partly in Giant Sequoia National Monument, the grove also became central to modern measurements of giant trees, though the 2020 Castle Fire caused severe losses and damage.
