Battle of Chickasawachee Swamp
Military
8
Near Chickasawachee Swamp, a decisive battle of the Southern Indian Wars was fought on July 3, 1836. About 300 warriors, entrenched on an island in the swamp after a raid in which they killed several settlers, were pursued into the swamp by a militia force under the command of Col. Thomas Beall, and a fierce battle followed. A number of Indians were killed, 13 soldiers were wounded, one mortally, and a large amount of plunder taken in the raid on Roanoke was recovered there. The battle broke the Indians’ march into Florida and scattered their main force into small parties.
