The brave men and women of Fayette County left their homes and families throughout time to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States so that freedom would be preserved and communities kept safe from the aggression of enemies. Their service to the country made it possible to enjoy an unsurpassed quality of life in a nation regarded as the greatest in the world. In honor and memory of all veterans who sacrificed to protect the homeland, the citizens of Fayette County dedicated this tribute in 1996 and offered their humble thanks, recalling the words of Jesus Christ: ‘Greater love has no man than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.’
