Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is a North Carolina state park near Jefferson that preserves the peak of Mount Jefferson, a mountain rising more than 1,600 feet above the surrounding landscape with views over Jefferson and West Jefferson. Once called Panther Mountain, it became far more accessible in 1939 when the Works Progress Administration built a road to the summit area. Local residents then donated land and raised money to secure state park status, leading to its official establishment in 1956. Named for Thomas Jefferson and Peter Jefferson, it was recognized as a National Natural Landmark in 1974 for its scenic prominence and natural significance.
