The Hermit is a 12,328-foot mountain in the Sierra Nevada of central California, in northern Kings Canyon National Park, where it rises dramatically above Evolution Valley and stands out as a recognizable landmark. Theodore Solomons named it in 1895 after his party saw its sharp, solitary profile on the valley’s south wall. The peak lies in an alpine climate shaped by Pacific storms, with runoff draining into Evolution Creek. Its recorded climbing history began in 1924, followed by additional ascents and route development in the 1920s and 1930s. Its prominent relief, early naming history, and varied climbing routes give it a distinct place among the peaks around Evolution Valley.
