Ponce de Leon is said to have named this place after the Bay of Biscay in his native Spain. A reef near the park’s northern end is called Fowey after a British warship that wrecked there in 1748, and the pirate Black Caesar found hiding places in the mangrove-lined channels, leaving his name to a nearby creek. The area’s history of exploration and maritime activity is visible on the land and water, with more than forty shipwrecks in the park, including the Mandalay wreck.
