Potawatomi State Park, a 1,225-acre park northwest of Sturgeon Bay in Door County, was established in 1928 on shoreline land with broad views over Sturgeon Bay and Green Bay. Its history reaches back to the 1830s, when the federal government opened a dolomite quarry there and, after the Menominee ceded their claim to the Door Peninsula, reserved 1,000 acres on the bluff known as Government Bluff for its strategic position and stone resources. The land remained federally owned until Wisconsin bought it for a park. Later developments included recreation facilities, a winter sports center, and trails and water access that support year-round outdoor use.
