The King's Road was a major capital project and transportation route of the British Crown during the late 1700's, built to connect North Florida and St. Augustine with the Turnbull Colony in New Smyrna, established in 1768. Archaeologists believe the route was changed so it could cross Hulett's Branch over the earthen sawmill dam. In this area, the road was used from about 1770 until 1813, when the mill was destroyed, and British soldiers, colonial sawmill workers, Spanish colonists, Native Americans, Minorcans, African American slaves, and freedmen passed through or stood here.
