The Stagecoach Inn is recognized as one of Michigan’s outstanding examples of Greek Revival architecture in America. Built in 1838, it stands directly on the famous Territorial Road, following Indian trails from Detroit to Chicago. Mr. Zenos Tillotson was its first proprietor, operating it as a hotel for weary travelers through southern Michigan. As early as 1846, he ran stagecoach lines from Ann Arbor to Niles with Marshall as the main stopping point. It was a busy and important hostelry that welcomed many historically important people and remains part of the oldest continuously open town between Detroit and Chicago, one of the rare genuine early American places of historical interest in the Midwest.
