Big Bead Mesa, or Yooʼtsoh, is a historic Navajo habitation site near Grants, New Mexico, in Cibola National Forest. Occupied from about 1745 to 1812, when the Navajo were allied with the Apache, it stood on a defensible mesa edge in a tense landscape near Jemez and Acoma Puebloan settlements. Centered on a large fortified village with about 90 identified hogan sites, the settlement also included sweat lodges, food cache areas, defensive works, ceremonial dance grounds, and a substantial wall. Its remains offer an unusually clear view of Navajo movement and relations with surrounding Puebloan peoples during a changing era in regional history.
