Steamtown, U.S.A. began in the early 1960s as F. Nelson Blount’s museum and excursion railroad, first in North Walpole, New Hampshire, and later at Riverside near Bellows Falls, Vermont. Built from Blount’s large collection of historic locomotives and rolling stock, it became known for summer and autumn trips over Green Mountain Railroad lines and at its height was called the world’s largest grouping of steam locomotives. After Blount’s death in 1967, declining attendance, operating disputes, and other problems weakened the Vermont operation. The collection moved to Scranton in 1983, helping form what became Steamtown National Historic Site.
