The Bellows Falls Petroglyph Site in Bellows Falls, Vermont, preserves a rare and unusual group of precontact Native American rock carvings on bedrock above the Connecticut River near Great Falls. Two panels on the east side of Bellows Falls Island contain twenty-four figures, generally seen as human heads with eyes, mouths, and radiating lines. Their abstract forms have been compared to traditional corn husk masks of Abenaki and Iroquois peoples. Known since the late 18th century, the carvings are important because similar imagery is scarce in New England, and parallels in places such as Pennsylvania and Canada suggest broader prehistoric cultural connections.
