On Nov. 1, 1864, a Confederate force of 32 under Colonel R. J. Breckinridge, Jr., and Major Theophilus Steele raided Williamstown, planning to seize a reported large sum of USA money. Finding the money removed, they plundered Tunis’ Store and took 30 USA muskets.
