Beltzville State Park in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, surrounds Beltzville Lake, a reservoir created as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Beltzville Dam flood-control project on Pohopoco Creek. Opened in 1972, the park reflects both recreation and upheaval, since the village of Big Creek Valley was vacated in 1966 to make way for the lake. Fishing, boating, and seasonal swimming are central attractions, while hiking trails cross old roads, wooded paths, and stream banks. The Saw Mill Trail connects visitors to older features of the valley, including gristmill remains, a slate quarry, ponds, and wetland areas, and year-round activities keep the park in use.
