Fort Bridgman was the first white settlement in Vernon, Vermont. Built in 1737, it was the scene of many Indian massacres and was sacked and burned by Indians for the third time on June 27, 1755, after Caleb Howe was slain and fourteen persons were taken captive, among them his wife Jemima Howe and her seven children.
