Old Bethel M.E. Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and is still used for special services. The original log church was constructed by the Rev. John Collins in 1805. In 1816 the framework of the present church was erected, and more renovations were completed in 1867. In 1875 the Old Bethel N.E. Church Historical Society was formed to preserve and maintain the church. In the adjacent cemetery, maintained by the Tate Township trustees, many of the area’s original settlers are buried, including John and Sarah Simpson, the grandparents of President U.S. Grant, and the Rev. John Collins and his family.
