Bison Peak, officially designated Bison Mountain, is the highest summit in the Tarryall Mountains of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains and the highest point in the Lost Creek Wilderness of Pike National Forest. Rising to 12,432 feet, it stands about 8.1 miles north by west of Tarryall and dominates the surrounding Lost Creek area. Its widely used common name comes from rock formations near the summit that were said to resemble American bison. Though Bison Mountain is the official name, Bison Peak is the name most commonly used, reflecting the mountain’s identity as a prominent wilderness high point.
