Tolmie Peak rises a little over 5,920 feet in the northwestern part of Mount Rainier National Park, near Mowich Lake and above a glacial basin holding Eunice Lake. Its slopes feed Tolmie Creek and Ranger Creek, linking the mountain to the Carbon, Puyallup, and ultimately Puget Sound watersheds. The peak is part of the rugged northwestern Mount Rainier landscape shaped by glaciers and mountain lakes. It is named for William Fraser Tolmie of the Hudson’s Bay Company, who in August 1833 made the first recorded exploration of the Mount Rainier area with two Indigenous guides, Lachalet and Nuckalkat, though the exact peak they climbed remains uncertain.
