Cedar Mountain Wilderness in northwestern Utah protects part of the Cedar Mountains south of Interstate 80, where juniper-covered higher slopes give way to desert shrubland below. Its landscape bears signs of both nature and people, including areas altered by range fires and the remains of an aragonite mining camp. More than half of the 180,000-acre Cedar Mountain Herd Management Area lies within the wilderness, and feral horses introduced in the late 19th century remain a familiar presence alongside wildlife such as pronghorn antelope. The wilderness designation also served a political purpose by helping block rail access to a proposed nuclear waste storage facility near Skull Valley, a project abandoned in 2012.
