In 1859, John Hoile established a flour gristmill at First South between First and Second East in a small one-story frame building. On June 20, 1870, John Hague bought the mill and operated it until his death in 1900. The mill then stood idle until 1907, when the Juab Mill and Elevator Company purchased it and immediately expanded its manufacturing capacity by adding a three-story brick structure. The wheel was the third and last one used at the millsite. A wooden flume, or millrace, raised 16 feet on stilts, carried water from Salt Creek between Third and Fourth East, and the force of that flow turned the wheel that powered the entire mill. During the 1920s, the Juab Mill and Elevator Company bought the Nephi Mill and Manufacturing Company at First North and Second West. After that, flour was milled at the Nephi Mill and Manufacturing Company, while the old mill operated as a feed mill producing poultry feed and chopping and grinding grain. Activity at the original site ended in 1949, when both mills were sold.
