Jay Cooke State Park in Minnesota protects the lower Saint Louis River, where a rocky gorge, rapids, and falls long made travel difficult on a major canoe route between the Mississippi watershed and the Great Lakes. Native Americans established a portage later used by French voyageurs as the Grand Portage of the St. Louis. Donated in part in 1915, the park was heavily developed in the 1930s and early 1940s by Civilian Conservation Corps camps, which built Rustic Style landmarks including the River Inn and a suspension bridge designed by Oscar Newstrom. Flooding destroyed the historic bridge in 2012, but repairs and a replacement were completed by 2014.
