1
Wyoming County was formed on April 4, 1842, out of Luzerne County. Its name, honoring the Wyoming Valley, is derived from an Indian word meaning “extensive meadows.” Tunkhannock, the county seat, was settled in 1790 and incorporated in 1841. Sullivan’s March passed through the area in August 1779.
