Three miles southwest, Cherry Hill was the home of George McDuffie (1790-1851), an orator of nullification who served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, was a Major General of the State Militia, and was Governor of South Carolina. He studied at Willington Academy under Moses Waddel, and Cherry Hill was his home for most of his adult life. Five miles southwest, the Noble Cemetery is the burial place of members of the Noble family, including Patrick Noble (1787-1840), who served in the S.C. House of Representatives and Senate and was Governor of South Carolina from 1838 until his death. The cemetery stands on a high knoll overlooking the Savannah River.
