Salt Creek Wilderness is a protected area on the Pecos River northeast of Roswell, New Mexico, established in 1970 within Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Its significance lies in the meeting of Chihuahuan Desert scrublands, the Pecos river corridor, and eastern New Mexico’s artesian basin landscape. Wilderness protection was proposed in part to preserve red rock bluffs and habitat for native wildlife including roadrunners, quail, rabbits, deer, coyotes, and bobcats. Though it has no wetlands and draws relatively few migratory birds, it includes part of the Pecos River and sinkhole lakes that help support the Pecos pupfish.
