Washington Park grew from a forty point seven eight-acre tract bought by Portland in 1871 into a broad complex of parkland, institutions, and forested slopes west of downtown. First known as City Park, it was gradually shaped in the late nineteenth century, then redefined by John Charles Olmsted’s 1903 plan, which influenced its name, circulation, and emphasis on native plantings. Expanded by later land acquisitions, it came to include major attractions such as gardens, memorials, trails, reservoirs, the zoo, and Hoyt Arboretum. Today it remains a major urban woodland, recreation center, and transportation hub, while ongoing reservoir reconstruction has sparked preservation debate.
