Jacob Bayley, a veteran of the Indian Wars, led a migration of settlers from Newbury, Massachusetts, to the rich lands of the Coos at the Great ox-Bow. A staunch patriot, he bitterly opposed the Haldimand Negotiations carried on with Canada by Ethan and Ira Allen during the Revolution.
