In 1763, one of about 230 roadside points was erected on the Boston Post Road, with locations fixed by Benjamin Franklin, the Deputy Postmaster General, who drove a chaise with a distance recorder over the route for that purpose. It was restored to its original position on June 1st, 1927, by the Village of Rye, alongside the inscription, "Remove not the ancient landmark which thy fathers have set."
