Haverhill Corner developed within a mile-wide strip of land claimed by both Haverhill and Piermont and eventually divided between them. Its architecture reflects its history as the Grafton County seat from 1793 to 1891, the home of Haverhill Academy founded in 1794, and the northern end of the first Province Road from the coast, later the Coos Turnpike and now Court Street. Col. Charles Johnston settled here in 1769 and promoted the village's growth. His house and Gov. John Page's still stand, along with other notable dwellings, taverns, a church, a library, and school buildings.
