The bar tug Ranger was built in North Bend, Oregon in 1887 and served on the bay from 1889 until 1926, when she was abandoned in Eureka Slough. A propeller and tow bit were later salvaged there by William Zerlang after five years of recovery work, and in the final days of the operation it took 15 men to bring the objects down the bay on a barge to dry land. The iron propeller had been cast and then ground to its final specifications, weighed 4310 pounds, measured 9 feet 6 inches in diameter, and was powered by a 300-horsepower steam engine. The objects were recovered on May 7, 1977, and donated on January 19, 1985.
