Lake Bronson State Park in far northwestern Minnesota centers on a 325-acre reservoir that brought an unusual water landscape to a region with few natural lakes. Its setting reflects the retreat of Glacial Lake Agassiz, which left gravel ridges across the plain and a transition zone between prairie and forest. During the Great Depression, local leaders sought a reservoir to address drought and expanded the idea into a recreation area. Built by Works Progress Administration crews in 1936 and 1937 despite quicksand complications, the dam created both the lake and the park. The site later gave rise to distinctive stone buildings, helped inspire Bronson’s 1939 renaming to Lake Bronson, and remains a major recreation destination.
