At 118 North Howard, wealthy farmer and Indianola business contributor William Buxton built the building in 1895. According to the 1896 Indianola City Directory, its first resident was Butler and Miller Jewelry. After Butler and Miller closed in 1907, the address became home to a series of confectioneries. The first, M. Varela Candy Kitchen, kept that name for only a year before becoming the Indianola Kandy Kitchen, where kids and families enjoyed sweets and the atmosphere for the next 20 years. In 1928 the Stump family took over ownership, and the Kandy Kitchen eventually became known as Stump's Café. After the end of World War II, Pete and Wilda Seiler opened a bakery there, remembered for doughnuts before school and lunch breaks from busy days on the square. After more than 25 years in operation, the bakery closed, and Pete's Pizza opened in 1974 and remained open when this account was created.
