Indian Heaven is a broad volcanic field in southern Washington, not a single peak, extending across a forested plateau between Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams. Formed from the Pleistocene into the early Holocene, it contains about 50 eruptive centers, around 40 lava flows, shield volcanoes, cinder cones, and ice-related volcanic features shaped by glaciation. Its last known eruption about 9,000 years ago created the Big Lava Bed. The area is also significant for its long Indigenous history: Native peoples have used it for about 10,000 years, especially for huckleberry gathering, and that tradition continues within the protected Indian Heaven Wilderness.
