Caroline Pafford Miller (1903-1992) of Baxley became the first Georgia novelist to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. Born in Waycross, she spent her formative years in South Georgia's wiregrass country and, after moving to Baxley, lived on Anthony Street and then Fair Street. She observed local people and gathered stories of pioneer life among yeoman farmers south of the Altamaha River, and those stories inspired her first novel, partly written at a back table in the soda fountain of Barnes Drug Store. Lamb in His Bosom portrays the daily life and language of two farm families living on subsistence farms on the isolated Georgia frontier in the mid-eighteen hundreds. The novel became a best seller, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1934, went through at least 37 printings, and was translated into several languages.
