Pond Island National Wildlife Refuge
Nature
Pond Island National Wildlife Refuge is a protected island at the mouth of the Kennebec River beside Popham Beach in Phippsburg, Maine. Part of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge, it belongs to a network of five coastal refuges that also includes Petit Manan, Cross Island, Franklin Island, and Seal Island. Covering only 10 acres, Pond Island is among the smallest refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Its importance lies less in its size than in its role within Maine’s broader chain of protected coastal island refuges.
