In Leadville, Colorado, the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum serves as both a public museum and a federally chartered memorial to people who made lasting contributions to American mining and related fields. Incorporated in 1987 and granted a Congressional charter in 1988, it became the only national mining museum with that status. After plans shifted from Golden to Leadville during the town’s economic struggles following mine closures, local support and private fundraising secured its home in a former school building. Its exhibits include an underground hardrock mine replica, model railroad, Gold Rush displays, minerals, and mining art, while debates over labor, safety, and environmental history have also shaped its interpretation.
