Apparently named by Clarence King’s 1870 survey team for German geologist Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen, it holds both geographic prominence and a commanding place in the range’s skyline. William S. Cooper likely made the first ascent in 1908, climbing alone and finding no sign of earlier visitors. Reached most often from Lake Agnes, the mountain remains a steep Class 3 climb on unstable scree in a cold alpine subarctic climate.
