Swiftwater Covered Bridge in Bath, New Hampshire, carries Porter Road over the Wild Ammonoosuc River and stands as one of the state’s few surviving 19th-century covered bridges. Built in 1849 as the fourth bridge at this crossing after earlier spans were lost to floods, it is a well-preserved example of the Paddleford truss associated with builder Peter Paddleford. The single-span bridge was probably erected under the oversight of town officials Joseph Fifield and John Carbee. Reinforced over time with laminated arches and steel beams, it has retained its historic character and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
