Old Belleview was an antebellum settlement on the Old Alabama Road between the Chattahoochee at Columbus and the Flint River at Double Bridges. Columbus was seized by Federal cavalry under Gen. James H. Wilson on April 16, 1865. The next day, Minty’s division was sent forward to secure the Flint River crossing at Double Bridges. This was done by the 4th Michigan and 3d Ohio Cavalry, Col. B. D. Pritchard commanding, after a rapid night march and a surprise attack early on the 18th. The rest of Wilson’s forces left Columbus that day, following Minty’s division by way of Talbotton, Belleview, Pleasant Hill, Double Bridges, Thomaston, and Culloden, with Macon as their destination.
