The distinguished Joiner family lived here in an imposing mansion that was demolished in 1970. James H. Joiner was a pioneer in Talladega's progress while serving as publisher from 1844 to 1873 of one of Alabama's most influential newspapers, The Democratic Watchtower. His son George A. Joiner was a Confederate naval officer, publisher, politician, educator, and a business, religious, and fraternal leader. His granddaughter Jeanette Alabama Joiner was an educator. His grandson Manly R. Joiner served as mayor of Talladega from 1922 to 1926 and from 1929 to 1935. His granddaughter Sarah Enfield Joiner was an educator and author, nationally known for her book, Graded Lessons in Speech, which was used throughout the U.S. in schools for the deaf.
