Old City Jail

West of the railroad tracks on Lincoln Street between McClure and Monroe, almost directly across from the Allen Canning Company Warehouse, stood a small jail about 12 by 12 feet, built of native stone cemented together. A single small window on the north side was covered with iron bars, and a thick wooden door faced east. Inside, two box-like wooden bunks without mattresses were fixed to the south wall. Built without a toilet or lavatory, this no-frills jail was a poor place to keep violators for very long. In the late 1960s, a large hole was dug nearby, and the jail was pushed in and covered with dirt.
